The Courage Behind the Craft: The True Story of Edward Christopher
What if every second on your wrist could tell a story of courage?
It’s a tribute to two real-life heroes whose bravery and selflessness inspired not just a brand, but a purposeful creative, commercial and charitable movement.
The Real Heroes: Edward & Christopher
Our name isn’t a clever marketing invention to affect a sophisticated sound and feel to our award-winning watch brand that designs and produces custom mechanical watches. It’s anything but because…
Edward and Christopher were two courageous British men who each saved a child’s life…which, for one of them, cost him his life. Their stories aren’t just anecdotes. They’re the heartbeat of everything we do.
Edward's Story
Edward was a British “Tommy” – a British soldier who fought in the trenches on the Western Front in the First World War of 1914-18; or, as his generation referred to it, the Great War.
Edward somehow survived the war and returned to his London home. But, not long after returning, he dived into an icy river to save a drowning boy...and saved his life.
But, because his health had been affected by the physical privations of war, his selfless act led him to getting influenza. And he died shortly afterwards. Edward was only 24.
Christopher's Story
Christopher, a chartered accountant and an entrepreneur, from Worcestershire in the UK, saved a young girl’s life after she stopped breathing at a summer event, too far from medical help.
While most people present were too shocked and/or screaming to do anything, his calmness, resolve and actions saved that girl’s life.
Both their legacies are woven into the DNA of our colourful watches: courage, determination and selflessness – old-style British values that the world needs now more than ever.
From Journalism to Watchmaking: My Journey
I’m Seán Brickell – the Founder of Edward Christopher, as well as an entrepreneur and a former journalist & broadcaster.
My path to creating Edward Christopher wasn’t linear. It was fuelled by a passion for storytelling, a love for mechanical and aesthetic beauty, and a belief that business should also be a force for good. Hence a desire to create an ethical watch brand.
Based on my heartbreaking experiences of nursing my father through the pancreatic cancer that killed him so quickly, and the profound reflections after this death, I realised that when your time on this earth is up you need to ask yourself three key questions about the life you have experienced and the life you have chosen to lead by asking yourself the following three questions…
- Have I lived fearlessly, fruitfully and feelingly?
- Have I loved and been loved warmly, wisely and wholeheartedly?
- Have I left a life-enhancing legacy of which I, and those who truly count with me, be rightly proud?
If you can honestly answer yes to one of those, you’ve had a good life. If you can say yes to two of those, then you’ve had a very good life. And if you can truly answer yes to all three questions, then you have made the very most of your life in all the best ways. And this is a driving force at Edward Christopher.
So, after years of telling and engaging with other people’s stories, I wanted to create something tangible that could tell its own. Watches became my canvas. The mission? To design mesmerising watches in magical colours for a meaningful purpose.
